We’ve become a “daren’t create” culture because creativity is risky. “Make the safe choice” has become the corporate mantra of the West. Risk-assessed, low-profile, compliance-controlled; everyone shackled to their desk with the pile of old, accepted ideas stacked neatly in the in-tray. Ideas and creativity are in short supply. That’s because creativity is dangerous. It realises that you need to make mistakes to move forward. Creativity spends more time asking “why?” and less time asking “am I allowed to?”

But it’s more about obsessive curiosity and analysis than whacky hats and “brainstorms”. It’s about finding smarter ways to do things and better ways to be. So don’t just accept what you’re told – it’s probably wrong anyway. Be unreasonable, ask difficult questions and don’t accept “because we’ve always done it this way.”
